Frequently Asked Questions:
What to expect from a treatment
At your first consultation your chiropractor will take a full case history, including general health, previous conditions and existing symptoms. This is to enable your chiropractor to assess what the problem is but also why it is there, as well as to ensure chiropractic care is appropriate and safe for you. You will be given an explanation about chiropractic and the proposed treatment plan and objectives.
Your treatment consists of an examination of the joints of the body, which may include neurological or orthopaedic tests, with adjustments being made using the light, dextrous techniques associated with the McTimoney technique.
After the treatment your chiropractor will give you specific aftercare advice in order that you can maximise the benefit of the treatment.
Do I have to undress?
Whilst most patients change down to their underwear it is usually possible to treat you through light clothing, or a modesty gown is provided.
What to do after a treatment
It is important that you are careful with yourself after your treatment to give your body opportunity to adapt to its new posture.
Your chiropractor will give you specific aftercare advice to help you get the most out of your care.
-
Take it easy for 48 hours – avoid strenuous exercise, lifting or twisting
-
Drink plenty of water
-
Focus on your posture – sitting, standing, lying down – keep as straight and well balanced as possible
-
Follow specific advice or stretching / mobilising exercises given by your chiropractor
Your successful results depend on what you do as well as your chiropractic treatment!
How will I feel after a treatment
During a course of chiropractic care you can expect to feel physical changes as your body realigns.
As well as relief from your symptoms you may experience temporary side effects, particularly after your first session. These may include stiffness or tiredness, headaches, different aches or you may simply feel a sense of wellbeing or balance.
How many sessions will I need
Most people experience positive changes within 2 to 6 treatments, although this can vary depending on what the problem is and how long you have had it. Other factors can also impact this including general health and fitness, stress, posture and age.
We normally give aftercare advice which may include self-care, posture, exercises and lifestyle to help optimise your recovery.
Our aim is to get you back doing what you enjoy as quickly as possible!
Wellness care programmes
After a successful course of treatments, many of our patients choose to schedule regular chiropractic check-ups several times a year to keep chronic conditions under control and prevent recurrence of symptoms. The interval between such wellness care depends on what suits your body and your lifestyle.
Regular chiropractic treatment may prevent future problems and help keep you more mobile.
Can anyone be a chiropractor?
No. It is illegal for anyone to use the title chiropractor unless they are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), which is the regulatory body for chiropractic in the UK. The GCC set and monitor standards in the profession and undertake checks on regulated chiropractors.
